THREE FISHING TIPS
Summer to Fall: Adjusting Your Kayak Fishing Tactics

1. Focus on Depth Changes:

As temperatures cool down, bass and other fish species start migrating to deeper waters.

Adjust your fishing tactics by targeting drop-offs, ledges, and deeper channels where fish are likely to school up.

Use your fish finder to identify these deeper spots, and switch to jigs or deep-diving crankbaits to reach them effectively.

2. Switch to Slower Presentations:

In cooler water, fish metabolism slows, making them less likely to chase fast-moving lures.

Transition to slower presentations like Texas-rigged soft plastics or finesse techniques like drop-shotting.

Allow your bait to linger longer in the strike zone, giving fish more time to bite.

3. Pay Attention to Baitfish Movements:

During the transition from summer to fall, baitfish start moving closer to shorelines and shallower waters, especially early in the morning and late in the afternoon.

Match your lure choice to the size and color of the local baitfish, and fish areas where you see baitfish activity, as predators are likely close by.

TASTY RECIPES
Traeger Blackened Bass

Ingredients:

  • 2 Bass - 2 to 4lb range - filleted

  • 1/2 stick of butter

Blackened Season Mix:

  • 1 tbsp smoked paprika

  • 1 tbsp salt

  • 1 tsp onion powder

  • 1 tsp garlic powder

  • 1 tsp ancho chili powder

  • 1 tsp white pepper

  • 1 tsp black pepper

  • ½ tsp dried thyme leaves

  • ½ tsp dried oregano leaves

Fire up the Traeger and turn it all the way up. The secret to this dish is red-hot cast iron. The actual cook time will be short, just 5-10 minutes, and there will be some smoke. Go ahead and place a cast iron griddle or skillet on the grill as it preheats.

While the grill and pan heat, mix the blackening seasoning and sprinkle it liberally over both sides of skinless bass filets.

Once the grill is to temp, drop the butter onto your cooking surface. It should immediately melt, then bubble, then start turning golden brown. Make sure the entire cooking surface is coated in butter, then carefully drop on the bass. Let the bass sear, undisturbed for 3-4 minutes. Using a long spatula, gently flip the filets to sear the opposite side.
