GEAR
Sit-On-Top Kayak for Beginners

When comparing the Ascend 10T and the Perception Pescador Pro 12 for a first-time buyer, both kayaks offer distinct advantages that cater to different needs and preferences in kayak fishing.

The Ascend 10T is an excellent entry-level kayak, particularly for those who are new to the sport and looking for something stable and easy to manage.

Ascend10T Fishing Kayak

  • It features a tunnel hull design that provides exceptional stability, which is crucial for beginners who might still be getting comfortable on the water.

  • The open deck design with plenty of storage space and a comfortable, elevated seat makes it easy to get started with fishing right away.

  • Additionally, it’s relatively affordable, making it a great choice for those who want to try kayak fishing without a large investment.

On the other hand, the Perception Pescador Pro 12 is a step up in performance and features.

Perception Pescador Pro 12

  • Thanks to its 12-foot length, it offers better tracking and speed and is more versatile for different water conditions.

  • The Pescador Pro 12 also includes a more advanced seating system, with a lawn-chair-style seat that provides superior comfort and adjustability.

  • While it’s slightly more expensive than the Ascend 10T, the additional features and improved performance make it a solid choice for someone ready to invest more into their kayak fishing experience.

If you are a first-time buyer looking for an affordable, stable, and straightforward kayak, I recommend the Ascend 10 T.

It’s a great value for the price, especially for those new to kayak fishing.

However, if you’re planning to take your kayak fishing more seriously and want a kayak that offers enhanced performance and comfort, the Perception Pescador Pro 12 is worth the extra investment.

Both are excellent choices, but your decision should depend on your budget and how quickly you plan to advance in the sport.

FRESHWATER CATCH
Blue Cat

Travis Strickland - Kayak Fishing Dads

If you're after blue catfish from your kayak, the trick is to fish deep and use fresh bait.

Blue catfish love to hang out in deeper water, especially near channels or drop-offs, so try to position your kayak in those areas.

Fresh cut bait, like shad or skipjack, is a catfish favorite and will give you the best chance at a bite. Use a sturdy rod and reel because these fish can get pretty big.

Patience is key, but when that rod bends, you'll know it's worth the wait!

THREE FISHING TIPS
Catching Bass in Shallow Water

Fishing for bass in shallow water can be exciting because they’re often more aggressive and ready to strike. Here are three techniques to help you land more bass when you’re paddling through the shallows:

1. Use Topwater Lures: Early in the morning or late in the evening, bass love to hunt near the surface.

Topwater lures like frogs or poppers can be irresistible to them.

Cast near cover like weeds or lily pads, and be ready for that explosive strike!

2. Work the Edges: Bass often hang out right along the edges of weed beds, fallen trees, or docks.

Cast parallel to these structures and slowly retrieve your lure.

Soft plastics like worms or craws can be especially effective here, mimicking the prey bass are hunting.

3. Try a Slow, Steady Retrieve: When fishing in shallow water, a slow and steady retrieve can make all the difference.

Spinnerbaits or crankbaits work great with this technique.

The idea is to give the bass plenty of time to spot your lure and decide to strike.

SALTWATER CATCH
Halibut

Great job landing a 26lb Halibut! 🎣👊

Peter Klos - Kayak Fishing Addicts NW

If you want to catch a big halibut from your kayak, the key is finding the right spot and using the right bait.

Halibut love to hang out over sandy or gravel bottoms, so try to set up your kayak in those areas. A fish finder can help you locate drop-offs or ledges, which are prime spots for these flatfish.

When it comes to bait, bigger is better—think herring, squid, or octopus. Drift fishing with a weighted jig or bait rig works great.

Just make sure your gear is strong enough because when you hook a halibut, you're in for a real fight!

TASTY RECIPES
Grilled Catfish Fillets

We tried this last week, and WOW!

Ingredients:

  • Four catfish fillets

  • 1 tsp of Old Bay seasoning

  • 1 tsp of paprika

  • 1 tsp of garlic powder

  • ½ tsp of salt

  • ½ tsp of black pepper

  • One lemon to finish

Stir together the Old Bay, paprika, garlic powder, and salt and pepper, then sprinkle it evenly on the catfish fillets.

Then prepare your BBQ grill or drizzle a little oil or butter in a cast iron skillet. Cook the catfish about 5 minutes on each side. To serve, plate the fish and squeeze on a little lemon. Enjoy!
