KAYAK GEAR
Dry Suits for Winter Kayak Fishing

❄️ If you plan on kayak fishing during the colder months, an O’Neil dry suit is one of the best investments you can make.

Unlike a wetsuit, which traps water to keep you warm, a dry suit is fully waterproof and designed to keep you dry even if you take an unexpected plunge.

Staying dry is the key to staying warm and safe when water temperatures drop.

When choosing a dry suit for kayak fishing, keep these features in mind:

  • Breathable Material: Look for a suit made from breathable fabric to prevent sweating and discomfort.

  • Gasket Seals: Check for snug seals around your neck, wrists, and ankles to keep water out.

  • Pockets and Zippers: Waterproof pockets and a relief zipper can make a big difference in convenience.

👉️ Pair your dry suit with warm base layers and wool socks to maximize comfort.

Remember, cold water can be dangerous, so gear up with safety in mind. A good dry suit keeps you fishing, no matter the season!

Smallmouth Bass

Smallmouth Bass

🐟️ December smallmouth bass fishing is all about targeting deeper waters where they hunker down for winter.

  • Focus on rocky ledges, drop-offs, and areas with subtle current using finesse techniques like drop shots or blade baits.

  • Slow presentations are key, as the cold water makes the bass less aggressive.

👉️ Dress warmly, and you'll find the reward of catching these bronze beauties well worth the effort!

THREE FISHING TIPS
Stay Safe While Kayak Fishing in Cold Weather

Kayak fishing in cold weather can be just as fun as in the warmer months, but safety has to come first.

Here are three quick tips to keep you safe and comfortable while chasing fish in chilly conditions.

1. Dress for the Water, Not the Weather
Even if the air feels mild, the water can be dangerously cold. Wear a dry suit or waterproof layers to stay dry and insulated.

  • Choose synthetic or wool base layers for warmth.

  • Avoid cotton as it retains moisture and cools you down.

  • Add a snug-fitting hat and gloves to keep extremities warm.

2. Always Pack and Wear a PFD
A personal flotation device is a must when kayak fishing, especially in cold weather. Falling into cold water can cause shock, so being prepared is critical.

  • Pick a comfortable PFD that allows free movement.

  • Store a whistle or signaling device in your PFD pocket.

  • Wear it at all times, no exceptions.

3. Check Your Gear and Have a Safety Plan
Cold weather can be hard on your equipment, so make sure it is in top shape before hitting the water. Also, let someone know your plan before you go.

  • Inspect your kayak and paddle for cracks or wear.

  • Carry a dry bag with a change of clothes and a first-aid kit.

  • Tell a friend your location and expected return time.

🎣 Fishing in winter can be rewarding, but a little extra preparation goes a long way. Stay safe, stay warm, and enjoy every moment on the water!
